Oh you will just have to come along and find out. Isn't better not knowing? Spoiler alert!! They are from Auckland. Here is a little info from their European tour: Er was een tijd dat muziek uit Nieuw-Zeeland in bepaalde ondergrondse kringen heel erg in was. Die muziek zat meestal op het Flying Nun label. Die tijden zijn voorbij, maar dat er in Nieuw-Zeeland nog steeds geweldige muziek wordt gemaakt, bewijst The Situations. Vooralsnog een redelijk obscure band, maar nu is het moment daar om The Situations te leren kennen. Ze spelen vanavond in Vera, Nieuw-Zeeland is niet om de hoek en het is werkelijk een hartstikke leuke band bovendien. The Situations, met vier jonge heren, onder wie twee broers, is opgericht in 2002. Nieuw-Zeeland hebben ze reeds van alle kanten doorgetourd en als voorprogramma bij The White Stripes speelden ze in Australië. Er zijn drie singles uit en in 2006 (bij ons pas dit jaar) verscheen de debuutplaat 'Situations Get The Basics', op het Duitse label Beyond Your Mind. En daar zijn we waar we wezen moeten, want dat is een hele leuke plaat. Met liedjes op het altijd interessante snijvlak van perfecte Pop en rafelige Garagerock. Waar de jaren zestig en zeventig actueler zijn dan de eenentwintigste eeuw ooit zal worden. De nummers van The Situations klinken nergens al te gepolijst, maar zijn met aandacht en vernuft in elkaar gezet. Je hoort rammelende gitaartjes, fijne samenzang, een jengelend orgeltje en een tamboerijn op het juiste moment. Soms giert het bijna uit de bocht, maar nooit gaat het helemaal over de kop. Kortom, ongecompliceerd, fijne niets-aan-de-hand muziekjes zou je oneerbiedig kunnen zeggen. Aangenaam on-hip en tegelijkertijd heel aantrekkelijk en -niet onbelangrijk- met het muzikale hart op de juiste plaats. Gegeven hun myspace site, myspace.com/thesituationsband, zijn ze beïnvloed door onder meer The Fall, Velvet Underground, Modern Lovers, Bo Diddley en Beatles. Dat zijn dooddoeners die je wel vaker tegenkomt. Immers, zijn we niet allemaal op de een of andere manier wel een beetje beïnvloed door The Fall of Velvet Underground? Alleen bij het beluisteren van The Situations hoor je deze invloeden er wel degelijk in terug. En goed ook, maar zonder dat het er te dik bovenop ligt en het een eigen geluid in de weg staat. Daar komt bij dat Pepr's zelfverklaarde drie-eenheid waar het bij goede muziek om dient te gaan, de elementaire combinatie van Song, Sound & Soul, ook bij The Situations helemaal in goede handen is. Met andere woorden, dit wordt een bijzonder geschikte avond voor eenieder die lichte rommeligheid en ogenschijnlijke chaos prefeert boven heel strak in de maat en onberispelijk zoals het hoort spelen. Tevens kunnen zij die in het verleden alles volgden van het Flying Nun label of muziek waar het label Kiwi op werd geplakt, hun hart ophalen. The Situations past namelijk zeer goed in deze traditie. En in het algemeen geldt dat iedereen die gewoon van mooie muziek houdt met mooie liedjes, of dat nu The White Stripes en The Strokes zijn of Black Lips en Wooden Ships vanavond maar eens een kijkje moet komen nemen bij The Situations. Over een maandje is Eurosonic en daar heeft The Situations niets te zoeken, want je kunt veel van de band zeggen, maar Euro is er niet bij. Toch is The Situations het soort band dat we stiekem allemaal op Eurosonic zoeken. Die band die je nog niet kende, of hoogstens van horen zeggen, waarvan de omschrijving in het boekje je wel aanspreekt en die live vervolgens je stoutste verwachting weet te overtreffen. Eerst sta je nog een beetje geamuseerd te kijken, dan komt er een grijns op je gezicht en vervolgens weet je je hoofd niet meer stil te houden en brul je opeens om een toegift. Die ervaring kun je vanavond alvast meemaken. Je hoeft er niet eens voor in de rij te staan. Er is ook niemand die probeert bier over de rand van je plastic beker te duwen. En uitverkopen zal het evenmin. Kortom, er is werkelijk geen enkele reden om deze avond met The Situations aan je voorbij te laten gaan. That helpful?

The Situations can heard right now on Contact FM & Community Radio. Tune in to hear exclusive tracks from the bands Spanish-only 7" release (Munster Records). They toured Europe in 2007, playing legendary clubs such as Vera in Groningen, NL, and opened for The White Stripes in Australia. The Situations draw many a comparison, ranging from The Fall to The Modern Lovers, but the term 'Garage Rock' seems to fit well.. Penelope The The Hamilton rock powerhouse formally known as Beatrix. With a bad ass sound that's loud enough to make your mum cry, influenced by The Raconteurs and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to name a few. Fronted by Emerald Rose with her haunting voice and in your face guitar playing, backed by the tight rhythm section of Jarred Dobbs on drums and Stephen Daniell (aka Stevie D) on bass. With catchy riffs and rhythms that will make you think, there is enough in their set to satisfy the soul of any lover of rock music. Nightmares Nightmares are exponents of the short and sharp end of the grindcore scene. Like their music, there is no messing around with these guys. Only two years in and the have already released two eps and are working on their debut full-length album, which will be out soon.
