Hi everyone. I'm hoping we can keep this debate clean (might be asking for too much though), but Contact FM is starting to rally support for it's bid on the 89FM frequency. The FM license is up for renewal in April 2011. If our bid for the 89FM frequency is successful, it would enable Contact FM to rejoin the B-net, and Contact would be eligible for B-net funding. All other university cities in New Zealand have the benefit of a B-net station. Hamilton has been deprived of a proper B-net station for the last 10 years. It is time to fix this. We have a Facebook group to discuss the topic. Anyone is invited to join, whether you are for or against the bid. We will be starting a petition on Wednesday. If you are at uni, visit the station on Clubs Day and sign up to show your support. An online version will be available shortly after for anyone else who would like to sign up.

Also: Might I add that maybe the people behind Backbeat and Contact should get together to make a new super mutant awesome station? Though Backbeat has been going a little while now, so is overdue to collapse into nothingness like all the others. It could be easiest to wait in the wings and rape the corpse.

Quote 89FM was a student radio frequency given to the WSU for Contact FM in the 1980's. It was sold off when there was a right-wing takeover of WSU during a period of voluntary unionism in the late 1990s. The frequency has been sub-leased to private owners since. This frequency is up for government renewal next year. Our petition is just to show the local community support for our bid. High powered frequencies cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and are completely open to commercial bidding. Only the biggest companies can compete for commercial frequency bidding, which is why there are pretty much no independent radio stations between 89 and 100fm.. Backbeat is not eligible to join the B-net because it does not meet some of the B-net requirements (just like Contact 88.1 FM doesn't meet B-net requirements because it doesn't have the frequency). A lot of people in the community do feel that 89FM is Contact's frequency and it should be returned. Getting the frequency back would be a big deal to a lot of Hamiltonians. You'll find a very detailed history of the 89FM frequency here: http://www.expdev.net/htownwiki/index.php/Contact_FM

I put on 89.0FM on my radio and someone is reading HORRORscopes. Feels like it is a wasted frequency right now. GOGO contact. Actually.. HORRORscopes actually sounds entertaining.. "Virgo: Maggots will eat your brains while you sleep" This was actually horoscopes.

Pisces: You will turn on 89fm today and you will hear Creed. This is a great time to stab your ears with a knitting needle. Singles will meet Mr Right at the A & E. Couples will have a threesome with a handsome Indian doctor from A & E.

Quote We havent played Creeed or Nickelback for instance since we moved out of the evil lair actually into our cool new offices :P But anyway heres some facts: "Radio Active is an alternative radio station broadcasting in Wellington, New Zealand on 89 FM. It began as the student radio station for Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association (VUWSA) but was sold to Radio Active Limited in the 1990s. VUWSA's new station, The VBC, is not a bNet member." http://www.wikipedia.org%252Fwiki%252FRDU-FM%2523RDU-FM&h=6ed16g5cJK9_KiHBQo3bcXWllCg&ref=nf Does sound familiar, and if any of you listened to 89FM for an entire week, I think you'd change you tune'ing, massive variety of music, our night shows are well listened to and genres include Punk|Dubstep|Indie|Grunge|Noise|Rock|Metal|Dub|Electro|Acid Jazz|Black Metal|Ambient|Electronica|House|Minimalist|Prog|Sludge|Stoner|Rockabilly|Ska, We also have more students than any other station broadcasting and working for us than any other station in the waikato and ties with the WSU also (not including the legal ones)

Quote The difference is that Radio Active was previously owned by a student union. Bnet is a collection of student radio stations and ex-student radio stations. If Backbeat is eligible to join the Bnet, why has the owner of the sublease for 89FM never joined it in the 8-9 years he has owned the frequency. All of the different versions of the station, whether it be The Generator, early Backbeat, or Backbeat under Sedition Promotions, have all had a student/youth focus. Joining the Bnet would seem to be a no-brainer. I'm assuming your employer would have looked into joining the B-net in the near decade that he has owned it.

While I prefer to stay out of this, I would like to point out that the b-net changed its name from the SRN or Student Radio Network. The stations at the time had realised that their audience wasn't necessarily made up of students, but of a wide range of people. The name SRN was also a hindrance to the selling of advertising as some looked upon student radio as unprofessional or not serious radio. The b-net is based around an idea or ethos. It rightly or wrongly, grew out of student radio into something else, but was primarily a branding exercise to break away from the negative connotations that 'student radio' had come to represent to advertisers. I know this because I was at the national conference where this was discussed and implemented. Becoming a member is not a simple matter of having the frequency and being run by students. The music and the culture are fundamental, the frequency range is essential, as is a certain level of professionalism. Having all these boxes ticked still wont guarantee acceptance to the clique that is the b-net. With all due respect to Backbeat, I doubt they are any more 'eligible' to join the b-net than Contact currently is.

Quote Is this 'working for us' in the same way UFM/Generator had a staff roster of about 1000, but only two or three people that were actually paid for the hours they worked? Looking back on it, I don't understand how Joe Dennehy wasn't ruined in a hail of lawsuits and criminal charges. I guess we were all a little naive.

Quote Under b.net we have to have more volunteers than paid staff, so all but 1 of the students is unpaid and theyre happy with that, though one of the shows that just got sponsored contains a student so he's now being paid

I sure do love Harry Potter. Well guessed. In related news today at work I could only get stupid Christian shit on both stations. (You are so alike!) Contact because of bleed and BB because the couple of chords I heard sounded too much like Creed so I quickly hit search again. Concert FM won the day. Youse have nothing on Radio NZ.
